Time to Rethink Following “MAGA Mike Duggan”

Detroit, it’s time for some real talk.

After Tuesday’s election, one thing is clear: following “MAGA Mike Duggan” down his independent path was a mistake. For the preachers, community leaders, and voters who thought leaving the Democratic Party to follow him was a bold new move — the results speak for themselves.

Michigan voters sent a message loud and clear. The same men, Hispanic voters, and working-class families who tilted toward Donald Trump last cycle came back home this time — and handed Democrats victory after victory. The MAGA movement took another shellacking, and so did anyone tied to it.

Let’s be honest: you can’t claim to stand for the people while standing next to a movement that disrespects women, dismisses Black voters, and divides communities. Preachers who once preached justice are now repeating talking points written by power brokers. That’s not prophetic leadership — that’s political drift.

Detroit has always been the heart and conscience of Michigan politics. When we move together, we win together. When we splinter off chasing false promises of “independence,” we lose the leverage our ancestors fought to build.

Tuesday was a wake-up call. The voters rejected Trumpism and its imitators. They voted for progress, for fairness, for democracy itself. It’s time to come home — to rebuild our movement, reclaim our message, and remind the world that Detroit still leads.

The Democratic Party isn’t perfect. But it’s still the best hope we have to protect our communities, expand opportunity, and keep the fight for justice for all.
