A Summer Staple is Born: The Courageous Games Redefine Detroit’s Sports Calendar

As a board member of Courageous, I am filled with pride and gratitude as I reflect on the extraordinary 2025 Courageous Games, which unfolded this weekend at the vibrant Wayne State University campus. Now celebrating its fifth anniversary, the event has grown into a cornerstone of youth sports in the Midwest, drawing between 2,500 and 3,000 student-athletes from Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, and towns across Michigan. 

From the moment the opening ceremony began, the energy was electric. The campus buzzed with excitement as athletes in brightly colored uniforms gathered with their teams, exchanging high-fives and words of encouragement. The Courageous Games are more than a competition—they are a festival of possibility and promise, where young people come together to test their limits and form lasting friendships.

This year’s event featured a thrilling lineup of sports, including swimming, Track and Field, Softball, and both Girls' and Boys' Basketball. The swimming pool was alive with splashes and cheers as competitors raced neck and neck, while the track echoed with the pounding of determined feet and the roar of supportive crowds. On the softball diamonds and basketball courts, teamwork and skill were on full display, with athletes giving their all and celebrating each other’s achievements. 

What truly sets the Courageous Games apart is our unwavering focus on safety and positive values. Every aspect of the event is designed to ensure a fun, non-violent experience where kids can thrive. Our dedicated volunteers and staff work tirelessly to create an environment where sportsmanship, respect, and courage are celebrated as much as winning. The laughter of young athletes, the encouragement from coaches, and the applause from families all combine to create a sense of belonging and joy.

As I walked through the event, I was struck by the diversity and unity of our participants.

Athletes from different backgrounds and cities came together not just to compete, but to learn from one another and build bridges across communities. The Courageous Games have become a powerful platform for showcasing the talent and determination of our youth while also fostering understanding and friendship. 

As we mark five years of growth, I am inspired by the stories of perseverance and triumph that unfold each year. From first-time participants discovering their passion for sports to seasoned athletes setting personal bests, every moment is a testament to the potential within our young people. 

The Courageous Games would not be possible without the support of our partner cities, sponsors, volunteers, and families. Together, we are building more than an event—we are nurturing a movement that uplifts and empowers the next generation of leaders. Thank you to everyone who made the 2025 Courageous Games a resounding success.
